Humphries seemed poised to extend his winning ways last Sunday after cruising through the tournament, dropping a mere three sets over four spectacular matches, including a resounding 5-0 semi-final drubbing of Ryan Joyce.

Yet it was De Decker, the 150/1 dark horse ranked way outside the top 30, who pulled off a colossal upset, nabbing a 6-4 victory to snatch his debut televised darts crown and the hefty £120,000 winner’s cheque.

“I’m obviously gutted to lose,” Humphries joked. “I felt like I was really on the wire through everything, he frustrated me. But I told him at the end I’m so proud of him because he showed so much bottle. He really did,” reports the Express.

“I know how it felt to be in that position a year ago – I felt my heart racing, my hand shaking. He looked cool as anything. Tonight it wasn’t my night and sometimes you have to accept that.

“We’ve got a great champion and now he’s got a target on his back, like I’ve got. All credit to him. He’s a fantastic guy and a great player. I think Kayley will be happy I’m not bringing that [trophy] home!”
