Airline shuts down in-flight meals service after ‘mouldy rooster’ grounds airplane
More than 200 Delta flights leaving Detroit Metropolitan Airport were ordered to shut down their in-flight meal services.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had been conducting a routine inspection of the kitchens before they found a “food safety issue”.
After the organisation forced Delta Airlines to close its facilities, the airline was prompted to state publicly how it was looking to change the way it produces both hot and cold food.

“During a recent inspection at a Detroit Metro Airport kitchen, Delta’s catering partner was notified of a food safety issue within the facility. Delta and its catering partner immediately shut down hot food production and subsequently suspended all activity from the facility,” the airline said in a statement.

On yesterday’s (October 14) flight, passengers were given sandwiches from Panera Bread in place of the usual hot meal and offered 2,500 SkyMiles for compensation.
It’s not the first time this year Delta’s culinary offerings have come under scrutiny. In July, a flight from Detroit to Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing after passengers were served mouldy chicken, leading to several people onboard getting sick.

Photos shared to social media showed black mould growing on the chicken, which both pilots onboard reportedly ate too, according to Daily Mail. Nancy Kirchoff, 65, spoke to the publication about the shock announcement from the pilot mid-flight informing passengers there was “some type of food issue and people were sick”.
She added: “They said they saw some mold on the chicken. I asked if anyone had gotten sick and they told us no one had been affected, but the pilots both ate the chicken.”
Medics met the plane after it made a premature landing at JFK and gave aid to 10 flight crew and 14 passengers.
