The country villa where the tragedy unfolded is nestled between the seaside town of Torrox and the inland town of Sayalonga in an area known as Pago de Montealegre, just off the Costa del Sol.

It remains unclear whether the little girl was on holiday with her parents or resided at the property, though a local report painted it as the family home, mentioning that the youngster had two older siblings attending a nearby school.

Well placed sources revealed they are exploring the possibility that the tot slipped into the pool unnoticed by her parents, reports the Mirror.

Torrox mayor Oscar Medina labelled the girl’s death a “tragic incident”, extending his “sincere and profound condolences to the family on behalf of all local residents”.

A representative for a local government-run emergency coordination centre announced: “A three-year-old girl has died today in a swimming pool in the Torrox area of the province of Malaga. We received a call at 12.04pm today alerting us to the fact a minor had been recovered from a pool at a property between Torrox and Sayalonga and attempts were being made to resuscitate her.”

“Emergency responders were immediately activated. A helicopter was mobilised along with the Civil Guard, local town-hall employed police and health professionals. They later confirmed the little girl had died without offering any more details about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
