Meet Thomas Tuchel’s assistant supervisor Anthony Barry with three nations on CV
Thomas Tuchel has officially been unveiled as England’s new head coach – and he will be joined by Anthony Barry.
Barry, 38, isn’t perhaps the most well-known of assistant managers, but he has quite the pedigree on both the club and international stage. The Liverpool-born assistant is currently part of the set-up in Portugal, following Roberto Martinez to the Iberian peninsula after working in the Belgian set-up.
He has also been involved with the Republic of Ireland. And he’s done all of this while balancing his career as assistant under Tuchel at Chelsea – where they won the Champions League together – and again at Bayern Munich.

In his playing days, Barry had something as a journeyman career in the Football League after failing to make the grade at Everton. Never staying at a club for longer than three years, he turned out for the likes of Yeovil, Fleetwood and Forest Green Rovers.
He would hang up his boots in 2017 after a sole season with Wrexham. And then his coaching began, with three years assisting Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic.
In the summer of 2020, Barry joined Chelsea as first-team coach, before in February 2021, he replaced the departed Damien Duff in Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland coaching team, combining it with his duties at Stamford Bridge.
In February 2022, Barry left the Irish set-up to join Martinez at Belgium’s coaching team. He cited coaching the world’s no. 1 ranked team and the opportunity to compete at the World Cup as his motivation for leaving Ireland and joining the Belgians.
In March 2023, he had another dual role by re-joining Martinez with the Portugal national team, but soon linked up again with Tuchel at Bayern Munich in in April 2023, to contribute as set-piece specialist. And now they will work together to try and win England the silverware that has eluded the Three Lions for so long.
“For any Englishman in football, working with the national team is the pinnacle and I didn’t hesitate when Thomas asked me to come and join him again,” Barry gushed. “I know what a great place St. George’s Park is and how much of an advantage it gives our England teams, and the support it gives to coaches.
“This squad is very talented and have done so much to bring the country together, I look forward to meeting and working with them on this exciting project.”
Tuchel himself added: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.
“Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”
