Man jailed after sneaking onto neighbours’ properties to smell footwear

A 28-year-old man has been jailed after repeatedly sneaking onto his neighbour’s properties to smell their shoes, despite them begging him to stop.

Police were called after a neighbour found the defendant in his front garden sniffing his family’s shoes, which had been left outdoors to air.

The court heard that there had been at least three similar incidents in the past six months, despite neighbours having asked the defendant’s family to get him to stop.

The Greek man told the Thessaloniki court that he was unable to explain his behaviour, which he said had caused him great embarrassment.

He stressed that he had no intention of breaking the law or harming anybody and neighbours testified that he never displayed any sign of aggression during his nocturnal visits.

The man was arrested before dawn on October 8 in the small town of Sindos, about nine miles (15 kilometres) west of Thessaloniki.

The man was ordered to attend therapy sessions.

In August this year, a postman in Scotland was caught ‘sniffing a girl’s shoes’ on a doorbell camera.

In the creepy footage, the postman can be seen outside a flat shuffling through letters before posting them through the letterbox.

The mundane video of a postie going about his day-to-day job then takes a bizarre turn when he pauses by a shoe rack outside an apartment.

He then proceeds to bend down and pick up a white trainer which he appears to sniff before leaving the area.

The incident happened at 11.25am on August 28 at an address on Balnagask Circle in the Torry area of South Aberdeen, Scotland.

Mother of two Jade Mullen shared the video online, writing: ‘I would just like to let everyone know just to watch out for this postman.

‘He then turned around to sniff my daughter’s shoes – what an absolute creep.’

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘We received a report of a man acting suspiciously in the Balnagask Circle area of Aberdeen on Wednesday, 28 August.

‘Enquiries were carried out and no criminality was established. Suitable advice was given.’
