Old Trafford named ‘worst smelling stadium’ with overwhelming ‘sewage’ odour
Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, has been named the worst-smelling stadium in the Premier League according to a recent study.
The iconic stadium topped the charts for the highest number of complaints about odours, with fans taking to TripAdvisor to air their thoughts on the outdated arena that could be knocked down in the next few years.
Using the reviews, OddsMonkey analysed mentions of smell in the feedback left by visitors to all 20 Premier League stadiums and ranked Old Trafford as the worst. The once magnificent stadium has hosted countless of legendary football matches and is still the highest-capacity club football stadium in the UK.
One TripAdvisor user noted: “The smell of garlic in the stadium is extremely strong during the tour; this is what they put on the grass to help maintain it. Not the worst thing.”
The groundskeepers at Old Trafford apply garlic to the grass to deter pests so the smell is for a legitimate reason, but it hasn’t stopped supporters pinching their noses.
Other reviewers referred to the stadium as a “dirty place filled with a bad smell.” Another added: “overwhelming smell of drains (imagine a sewage farm).” The smell appears to be an issue all around the stadium and not just in the stands.
This news might not be a shock to United fans – who have called for redevelopment at the site. There are plans, backed by fans, to knock down the beloved ground and build a new world-class arena next door.
United remain rich in football history, and for those paying hundreds and even thousands of pounds to make the journey to the Theatre of Dreams, these aren’t problems they anticipated.
