Millionaire Labour donor Lord Alli is discovered to have damaged the House of Lords code of conduct 4 instances and advised to apologise

Keir Starmer‘s top Labour donor has been told to make a grovelling apology in the House of Lords after being found to have breached rules over declarations of business interests.

Multi-millionaire peer Lord Waheed Alli was today found to have broken the code of conduct four times.

The House of Lords standards commissioner has recommended that he make a formal apology in the Lords. It is a minor sanction but it will be embarrassing for the PM.

Sir Keir found himself at the centre of an ethics row last month after it was revealed that he, Lady Starmer and senior members of the Cabinet benefitted from donations toward clothing and fashion assistance from the former Asos chairman.

The House of Lords commissioner for standards investigation recommended he write a letter of apology for the breaches.

‘While I consider each individual breach of the Code to be minor, I have found there to be four breaches in total, and have therefore recommended that Lord Alli write a letter of apology to the Chair of the Conduct Committee, Baroness Manningham-Buller,’ the report said.

Under parliamentary rules, peers must register all their relevant interests and make sure any change in their relevant interests is registered within one month of the change.

Lord Alli correctly registered his trusteeship of The Charlie Parsons Foundation but should have also included his position as an unremunerated director of the foundation.

He was also found to have prematurely removed entries relating to his role in Silvergate BP Bidco Limited and to have been late in registering his interest as an unremunerated director of MAC (BVI) Limited.

Lord Alli wrote in a letter: ‘I am writing to you today to offer my apology for my breach of conduct by not registering my interests correctly.

‘I will endeavour to keep to the Code of Conduct at all times to avoid such circumstances again.’

Lord Alli is a media tycoon who has been known in political circles for years and donated to Labour for more than two decades.

His donations to senior Labour figures includes £20,000 declared by Sir Keir for accommodation during the general election campaign.

The PM has said this was to allow his son to study for his GCSEs in peace at Lord Alli’s central London flat, while the Starmer’s family home was surrounded by media.
