Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is ‘gone’ in summer time, former Premier League boss claims

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood reckons Liverpool will lose Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free this summer.

The Reds full-back is out of contract at the end of the season with Real Madrid mooted as a potential landing spot for Alexander-Arnold, in a move that would see him link up with his close friend and England teammate Jude Bellingham.

Come January, the 26-year-old will be allowed to negotiate a new deal with clubs across Europe with Liverpool yet to tie down the world class defender to a new deal. And the Reds are also having to deal with two other contract sagas too alongside the Alexander-Arnold situation.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are out of contract this summer. The pair, like Alexander-Arnold, have played a huge part in Liverpool’s impressive start to the 2024/25 season, with Arne Slot’s side having lost just one of their opening 12 fixtures in all competitions.

The Reds returned to the top of the Premier League last weekend with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, and look to be real title contenders. But, despite their good start, there can be no doubt their season right now is slightly shrouded by the looming contract expirations of Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah. While Van Dijk recently confirmed he had opened talks with Liverpool over a new deal, there does not appear to be any major developments in the cases of Alexander-Arnold and Salah.

And ex-Premier League boss Sherwood reckons Liverpool should be resigned to the fact Alexander-Arnold is “gone”, adding he believes the England international will not turn down Real Madrid.

“That helps,” Sherwood replied on Sky Sports after being asked if Liverpool’s successful start to the season could lead to them tying down Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah.

“We’re talking about three top-drawer players there who want to win trophies. They don’t want to sit there just to challenge for Champions League positions. They all want to win stuff so this start helps, it can only help.

“I think with Trent, I think he’s gone. Once Real Madrid come knocking for you… he’s won everything at the football club and been a magnificent servant but there’s no chance they’re keeping him now I wouldn’t have thought. With Van Dijk and Mo Salah, I think it’s completely different because I’m not sure where they are going to go which is better than Liverpool.”
