Tories given clear ‘change is coming’ warning as Nigel Farage points bombshell letter

Nigel Farage escalated his war with the Conservative Party earlier this week, urging hundreds of Tory councillors to defect to Reform UK ahead of council elections next year, so we asked do you think Farage’s ‘defect’ letters to Tories will work?

The Reform UK leader brazenly wrote to 1,352 Tory councillors warning that the ‘vast majority’ will lose their seats in upcoming elections next year, claiming the Conservative brand is ‘done’. The letter stands as a potentially massive headache for the Tory party, who are currently selecting their next leader after a catastrophic loss of seats in the General Election.

In a video posted on social media, Farage lashed out at the Tory leadership contenders, saying it is “actually irrelevant” who becomes Tory leader, while adding insult to injury by pretending to forget Robert Jenrick’s name.

Mr Farage said: “There are 1,352 conservative county councillors out there whose seats are up for grabs next time around. Interestingly, a huge number of them genuinely agree with us and what we stand for. You see, the Conservative Party in the country is very different to the Conservative Party in Westminster.”

“You know in your heart of hearts that this is four years on from peak Boris when the Conservative Party was doing well. And you know that the vast majority of you are going to lose your seats.”

The Reform UK leader went on to say he wanted to give Tory councillors an ‘opportunity’ to put themselves forward for his party before the end of November. In response to the video, a Tory spokesman said: “Reform has delivered a Labour government that has cruelly cut Winter Fuel Payments for 10 million pensioners and is now preparing to raise taxes despite all their promises not to.

“A vote for Reform this coming May is a vote for a Labour council.” We asked Mirror readers if they think Farage’s ‘defect’ letters to the Tories will work, and around 66% selected: “Yes – I think we could see defections,” while only 34% said: “No – they won’t work at all.”

What Mirror readers think from ‘change is coming’ to ‘desperate stuff from Nigel Farage’

Many readers commented on our original story, here’s a snapshot of what some of you had to say:

Kevinmerner74 said: “A change is coming people have had enough”

Iron57 wrote: “Conservatives tend to be a pretty self serving bunch, so most of them will do whatever keeps them on their particular gravy train.”

While kemper suggested: “The Tories are a spent force and likely to lose more numbers anyway. Farage will probably change the name of his party again in the near future anyway.

Looprevil1 also agreed, but took the opportunity to slam Farage: “This business man is making his move, he’s trying to woo disgruntled Tories to his business enterprise, Farage will rule the tory party(under new branding), the Tories are finished, Farage will make sure of that, good I say, but Farage has no policies”

However, many others questioned Reform UK over the move, Gailmarieb said: “Doesn’t he have enough people to stand against themselves councillors? Doesn’t he believe in his own party to win the seats as reform rather then get established councillors who if can leave one party can leave another”

Renta wrote: “Proves he got no people wanting to stand for his party it’s why he’s trying to pinch Tory ones even Tory’s not that hard up.”

Phoenix slammed Farage: “A grub by little opportunist, riding on the coat tails of history.”
