UK households delay turning on central heating till Halloween amid price issues

Despite the chilly weather, three quarters of UK households have yet to crank up their heating, with many hoping to hold out until 31st October.

When it comes to when to putting the heating on, over half say they are influenced by a drop in outdoor temperature, waiting until it averages nine degrees. While three quarters confess they turn up the thermostat as soon as they start feeling cold or uncomfortable.

A quarter admit they’re likely to succumb to demands from other members of their household.

In an effort to avoid turning on their boilers too early, 60% have been bundling up in layers and 24% have turned to electric blankets. Still, 52% of those who are yet to turn it on, say they’re looking forward to doing so next week.

However, in a bid to continue to keep costs low 57% say they’ll only heat their homes for an hour or two, even during the coldest months.

Interestingly, 45% plan to use an electric heater alongside their central heating this winter, with 34% believing it’s a cheaper alternative. And 15% intend to ditch their gas central heating entirely.

Yet, energy efficiency experts, Utilita, recommends doing this with caution as portable electric heaters can be three to four times more expensive per hour.

A spokesperson for Utilita Energy suggested: “When comparing electric heaters to central heating, it’s important to consider both cost and comfort.”

“While electric heaters can provide quick, localised warmth and are perfect for heating individual rooms, central heating offers consistent, zonal heating that’s much better for those on a budget.”

The study revealed that half of households feel confident in calculating the cost difference between an electric heater and gas central heating and two thirds are financially prepare for increased energy costs during the colder months when the heating needs to be switched on.
