Labour MP Mike Amesbury filmed in row with member of public – ‘you will not threaten me once more’

A Labour MP has been filmed in an altercation with a member of the public, shouting.

The clip shows former shadow minister Mike Amesbury standing over a man laid out on the pavement, pointing at him and shouting: “You won’t ever threaten me again.”

As Mr Amesbury walks away from the scene, an onlooker points out he’s the MP for Runcorn, he turns around and approaches the man again, shouting: “Yes I am, and you won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”

The incident is understood to have taken place in Frodsham, Cheshire. Mr Amesbury said: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.

“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Earlier last night, Mr Amesbury attended a policing and community safety meeting with Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price, reports the Manchester Evening News.

He’s a long-time campaigner for reducing the cost of school uniforms.

In a statement Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing.”
