The picture is inspired by a true story and follows Li Ronan, a woman who was cursed ‘after breaking a religious taboo’.
As a result, she must ‘protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions’ and fight to keep her child away from the demons of evil spirits.
The film is inspired by an incident in Taiwan in 2005, that saw a family of six claim that they were possessed by various Chinese folk deities – while accusing each other of being possessed by demons masquerading as deities.
The group burned each other with incense, hit each other with sticks and spirit tablets, as well as splashing faeces and urine on each other in an attempt to get rid of the demons.
Opting to single out the eldest daughter in the family, the others attacked her until she died of her injuries.
The five remaining members of her family were subsequently charged with the offense of ‘abandoning a helpless person resulting in the person’s death’.
The film went on to become the highest grossing Taiwanese horror film of all time- despite a mixed rating on review sites.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 75 per cent on the Tomatometer, with a slightly lower average of 62 per cent for its audience score.
