Virgil van Dijk blasts ‘no clue’ pundits as he provides verdict on Arne Slot’s new Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk reckons new Liverpool boss Arne Slot has got his side producing some ‘amazing’ football.
But Van Dijk has told his team-mates to focus on getting even better, in a bid to dethrone rivals Manchester City as English champions. Liverpool came from behind twice at the Emirates on Sunday to salvage a 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
The point keeps them just one behind City, in what is bubbling up to become another stunning title duel between the bitter enemies. But while Van Dijk has hailed the impact Slot has had since replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, he admits Liverpool still have some improving to do.
Liverpool have lost just once this season in all competitions. But the Dutch defender said: “At the start of the season, when a new manager is coming in, nobody thinks about how good it could go.
“The results have been outstanding. We are just trying to win the game ahead, improve and be the best version of ourselves, as a team and individuals, too.
“The games we have played so far, we have shown amazing football, defending and attacking. But there are also moments that we have to improve. We all know and realise that, and that is the focus on a daily basis before and after the games we play.
“There are many things we can analyse, good things, but also the lesser good things, and that is the focus we have. It’s about one game at a time.”
Some people suggested whoever lost last weekend’s clash in north London would be out of the title race in October. But Van Dijk reckons those who believed this are clueless.
The defender added: “I don’t know (how important the point will be). We are in October. People spoke about that if you lose this game, you will lose the league.
“And they have absolutely no clue in my opinion, because this season is so, so long and there are so many twists and turns that could happen and will happen. But we focus on the games ahead.
“The team that sets a very good foundation before December, and then goes through December in the best way possible, without any injuries and good results, has a good chance to be top of the league.
“But we focus on one game at a time. This was a tough one for both sides and we got a point. We go back and we focus on Brighton now, because that one will be a tough game on Wednesday as well.”
