Man Utd rocked by new Sporting CP calls for that have to be met to rent Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have been told to stump up more money if they want to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new gaffer.
United, who sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday, knew about Amorim’s £8.4million release fee they would have to pay in order to make the Sporting CP boss their new manager. However, it has also come to light that an extra £4m will be required to bring Amorim’s backroom staff to Old Trafford.
And the additional financial hits do not end there for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United. They may also have to pay a further fee in order for Amorim to be allowed to forgo a four-week notice period should they want him to start at Old Trafford immediately.
With United keen to install the Portuguese manager as soon as possible, Sporting know they hold all the cards in this negotiation, and are looking to make the most of their desperation.
Sporting had gone public with United’s interest in Amorim, issuing a statement after notifying the Portuguese financial regulator due to their listing on the stock market, reports the Mirror.
“1. Manchester United FC expressed interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim,” their announcement confirmed.
“With the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the Company and the coach, specifically for the respective termination clause and for the amount of Euro 10,000,000.00.
“2. Manchester United FC expressed interest in paying Sporting SAD the value of the aforementioned clause.”
The announcement about Sporting’s manager came just before their triumph against Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup on Tuesday night, a game which Amorim’s side won 3-1. Post-match, Amorim admitted to ongoing talks regarding his future but remained undecided.
“There is interest from Manchester United, there is the payment of a contract term and when I have something more solid, I will come here and tell my position, because it will be my choice,” Amorim said. “While I don’t have everything decided, for one side or the other, I can’t tell much more.”
He added: “It’s difficult. It’s almost impossible, it’s football, there was an announcement and it happened on match day. That’s out of your control.
“There was no talk of anything, it was just before the set pieces to get the elephant out of the room. Before the statement was released, I explained to the players everything that was happening. There is nothing more to say.”
And Amorim also acknowledged the frustration of Sporting fans too. “Of course they [the fans] are angry,” said Amorim. “They have a lot of affection for me and my work. I understand that and it’s perfectly natural. If I have the opportunity, and I certainly will, I’ll explain in detail why I decided one thing or another.”
