A board-certified dermatologist has revealed the skincare mistakes you need to steer clear of if you want to ‘age like a fetus’ – and some of them are quite surprising.

The crucial information was shared in a new video posted to TikTok by Dr. Shereene Idriss of Idriss Dermatology in New York City.

‘The rule here is to achieve an even skin tone, because once your skin tone is even, there is no filter,’ Dr. Idriss prefaced her video before sharing her guidance.

‘You can fake it ’til you make it until you’re six feet under.’

The first tip was to avoid using only Vitamin C in your skincare.

‘Starting with number one, a lot of you guys think Vitamin C is the holy grail ingredient when it comes to skincare, and that you’re gonna achieve a bright complexion, but this is not the case,’ she explained.

When used topically, vitamin C works to protect skin from outside damages like pollution, prevent against anti-aging, reduce dark circles and hyperpigmentation, among others.

‘There are no miracle ingredients and Vitamin C alone can do jacks*** to your skin tone,’ she explained.

The dermatologist said that Vitamin C is just one component you should be using if you have an uneven skin tone and dark spots.

The next no-no she warned about was relying on laser treatments.

‘Why are you going to get laser treatments if you’re not doing the hard work at home?’ Dr. Idriss wondered.

‘Your skincare has to be consistent on a daily basis in order to tackle discoloration and hyperpigmentation, and lasers should be viewed as a boost.’

‘And, trust me, I do a lot of laser treatments in my practice, so this goes against my own benefit,’ she added.

The third thing she recommended steering clear of was overusing or not using a retinol product at all.

Retinol, a form of Vitamin A and an ingredient that’s often added to various skincare products and topical agents, helps to increase the production of skin cells, per Cleveland Clinic.

It also works to help unclog your pores and exfoliate the skin, giving your skin anti-aging effects and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

‘If you overuse a retinol, you’re gonna get inflamed, and if your skin can’t tolerate it, inflammation is the worst thing you can do for your skin, and your skin tone,’ she explained.

‘And, if you’re not using a retinol, you’re really missing out, so consistency over intensity, try to incorporate it two to three times a week at least in your routine.’

And, her last two tips went hand in hand – making sure that you’re not expecting results to happen overnight, and expecting the sun to ‘cure you.’

‘Expecting overnight results is unrealistic, it takes time to reverse the damage and it has taken years to cause the damage,’ Dr. Idriss warned.

‘And last, just wear the damn sunscreen,’ she concluded.
