Edu leaving Arsenal in enormous blow to Mikel Arteta as sporting director quits membership
Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar is set to leave the club in a backroom shake up behind the scenes.
The Brazilian, a former Arsenal midfielder who made 217 appearances for the club, re-joined the Gunners as a technical director in 2019 before receiving a promotion. Edu played a key role in bringing the likes of Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice to the Emirates, signings which have helped Arsenal compete for the Premier League title during the last two seasons.
But the Arsenal sporting director has now decided to quit the club. The Mail report Edu will leave his role as sporting director, news which will be a huge blow to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
The Mail report the Brazilian has decided to leave the Emirates, for reasons that are currently unclear. However, it has been claimed it was Edu’s decision to leave, with details of his departure expected to emerge over the course of the next 24 hours.
One potential reason for Edu’s decision to quit the Gunners had been the suggestion that there may have been a change in responsibilities behind the scenes at Arsenal. However, a source stressed to the Mail it would be “too simplistic” to claim Edu’s departure was the result of a power struggle.
