Match of the Day star’s Mo Salah contract assertion is strictly what Liverpool followers need

Micah Richards has insisted that Liverpool need to extend Mohamed Salah’s contract for another two years.

The winger dazzled yet again on Saturday as he netted his seventh Premier League goal of the season as Liverpool roared back from a goal down to seal a 2-1 win over Brighton. The Egyptian international’s sensational strike catapulted Arne Slot’s side to the top of the Premier League, leaving them two points clear of Man City, who were left reeling from a shock defeat at Bournemouth, while Arsenal also lost 1-0 at Newcastle.

Despite clearly demonstrating how vital he is to Liverpool’s chances time and time again, the ‘Egyptian King’ could still depart the club as a free agent at the end of the season, if he doesn’t agree to new terms. Even though Salah turns 33 in June 2025, former City defender Rchards is adamant that Liverpool must offer their star player a new contract.

Scoring 162 Premier League goals has landed Salah among the top 10 Premier League scorers of all time. And Richards didn’t hold back surrounding Salah’s prowess during an appearance on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“He’s unbelievable, he really is. He’s excellent. Past Robbie Fowler, chasing Thierry Henry. There have been talks about contracts being under review or not they have got to sign him,” Richards said. “It is imperative that they give him a two-year deal at the end of the season. He’ll be 33 in the summer, it will take him to 35.”

In the midst of swirling rumours about his future and with no fresh contract on the horizon, Salah has sent Liverpool supporters into a frenzy with a cryptic post on social media. The man dubbed the ‘Egyptian King’ posted a snap of himself celebrating with the Anfield faithful, alongside a caption that’s got the Anfield sweating over his next move, as per the Liverpool Echo.

Salah wrote: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end. That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”

Despite edging toward his mid-30s, Salah keeps on coming up with the goods, racking up seven goals and five assists in just 10 Premier League games this term. However, there’s still radio silence from the Liverpool hierarchy over whether or not they want to keep hold of the club’s fifth highest top scorer ever.

It’s believed that Salah hasn’t yet made up his mind as he weighs up sticking with the Merseysiders or cashing in on a mega-money deal from the Saudi Pro League. Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested too, but it is thought that if Salah does leave then he would also leave Europe.

However, there is a thought that Liverpool’s No.11 is currently leaning towards staying at Anfield and isn’t actively pursuing a transfer. Salah is anticipated to advocate for an extended contract though, in contrast to the shorter agreement Liverpool would probably suggest.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also grappling with similar contract dilemmas, with both players able to leave on a free transfer next summer. Liverpool are now confronting the possibility of losing three of their crucial players if they don’t act swiftly.
