Ruben Amorim sends clear Viktor Gyokeres message as Sporting stun Man City
Sporting’s boss Ruben Amorim has snubbed the idea of pinching Viktor Gyokeres for Manchester United even after the player’s stunning hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.
Amorim was at the helm for the last time in Lisbon on Tuesday night and he sure did leave with fireworks.
City were initially dominating and nabbed an early lead thanks to Phil Foden, but Gyokeres’ goal just before half-time flipped the script. Maximiliano Araujo put Sporting ahead shortly after the second half kicked off, before Gyokeres nailed two spot-kicks to bag a win for the Lisbon-based side.
In the post-match interview, Amorim praised the send-off he got. “Looking at the game, it was written in stone. The opponent missing a penalty [when the score was 3-1].”
“There are days when things have to happen in a certain way. We started the second half very well,” reports the Manchester Evening News. “The crowd started to get excited. I couldn’t ask for another farewell. I’m very happy with this moment.”
After dishing out props to the supporters, the grilling moved onto Gyokeres and if he was on Amorim’s list for United. But the gaffer was straight up about his stance.
“Gyokeres? I’ve just made peace with them [Sporting], I’m not even going to joke about it [signing him for United],” Amorim declared. Gyokeres is at a big club and now all he has to do is finish the season here.”
TNT Sports received further insights when Amorim remarked: “No, no no. I cannot be funny with that. In this moment it was tough for me to leave, if I am starting joking about that with your cameras I have problems.
This is my city, this is my country so I will respect [that] Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else.”
