A tragic incident has occurred in Surrey where a four year old child was killed by a falling tree branch. The accident took place at approximately 4pm today (November 9) near Carshalton Road in Grove Place, Banstead.
Despite the prompt response of police officers, London Ambulance Service personnel and the London Fire Brigade, the child tragically succumbed to their injuries. Officers from the Metropolitan Police are working diligently to notify the child’s family members about the devastating event.
According to a spokesperson for the police: “The incident is not believed to be suspicious, however, enquiries continue to establish the circumstances,” reports the Daily Mail.
The task of contacting and informing all relatives of the child is currently underway.
Authorities have stated that there are no suspicions surrounding the incident, yet investigations are ongoing to fully understand what happened. The police said that they will compile a report for the coroner as the situation progresses.
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “Earlier today firefighters were mobilised to an incident near Banstead, following reports of a child being trapped by part of a fallen tree. At 4pm, crews from Croydon and Wallington fire stations, and a fire engine from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s Banstead Fire Station, were sent to the scene as part of our response.”
“Upon arrival firefighters immediately began to coordinate the rescue operation, working to make the scene safe and carrying out immediate emergency care in support of paramedics from the London Ambulance Service. Sadly, despite the effort of emergency service personnel in attendance, the child was declared dead at the scene.”
“The thoughts of our crews and staff across the entire Brigade are with the child’s family at this difficult time.”
