Hungry rabbit, big poppy man and mourning swan mascots be part of soccer minute’s silences
Over the course of the last two weeks, British football has stood still prior to kick-offs across the country with fans paying tribute to our fallen soldiers.
As is tradition, this weekend saw fans observe a minutes silence because of Remembrance Sunday impeccably. However, while players bowed their heads on the pitch to pay tribute to the fallen, some football fans could only notice the club mascots taking part in the minutes silence.
An account on X, ‘Mascots Minute Silence’, collates all the examples of mascots across Britain taking part in the Armistice Day tributes. And here Daily Star Sport has a look at some of the mascots who stuck out like sore thumbs bowing their heads respectfully during the minutes silence.
Boston United – Giant Poppy
Boston United’s 1-1 National League draw against Dagenham and Redbridge saw a giant poppy man paying tribute to the fallen as the Last Post rang out around the Jakemans Community Stadium.
Luton Town – Happy Harry
Earlier this week, Luton Town and Cardiff City paid their respects with a minutes silence at Kenilworth Road, a game which the Hatters won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jacob Brown. However, prior to kick-off, one fan could not help but take a photo of Luton’s mascot, Happy Harry, observing the silence.
Peterborough United – Peter Burrows, Mick the Skip and Peeby
Peterborough United ran rampant on Saturday afternoon, putting six goals past Cambridge United in a 6-1 win at the Weston Homes Stadium. Prior to kick off, the Posh’s trio of mascots, Peter Burrows, Mick the Skip and Peeby, all paid tribute during the minutes silence – as did Burrows’ carrot…
Swansea City – Cyril (and Cybil) the Swan
Arguably one of the most famous mascots to take part in mascot minutes silences is Swansea’s Cyril the Swan, in part due to his abnormally long neck which leads to him towering over anyone next to him even while bowing.
Raith Rovers – Roary Roar
Keen to not make a spectacle of themselves, Raith Rovers’ mascot Roary Roar opted to stand behind his side during a line-up photo ahead of kick-off against Ayr United. Raith Rovers went on to win the game 2-0.
CD Leganes – Super Pepino
And last but not least, we couldn’t not include a mascot story without mentioning La Liga side CD Leganes’ Super Pepino – who is quite literally a pepper. While Super Pepino was not bowing for Armistice Day in the post below, he was paying his respects to the victims of the flooding in Valencia.
