Ruben Amorim right-hand man confirms Sporting exit as new Man Utd backroom workers assemble
Ruben Amorim is set to bring his Sporting Lisbon backroom staff with him to Manchester United, as his assistant has all but confirmed their departure.
Amorim, 39, who has left Sporting for the Old Trafford gig on Monday, is currently in limbo due to work permit issues before he can officially start his new role.
The 39-year-old capped off his impressive stint at Sporting with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Braga on Sunday night. However, Sporting didn’t hang about and by Monday morning they had already announced Joao Pereira, the B team head coach, as Amorim’s successor.
While Pereira could be left on his own as assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital, and sports scientist Paulo Barreira are all set to rock up at Carrington once United sort out the paperwork with Sporting.
Fernandes let slip with a heartfelt Instagram post, saying: “So many moments that I will cherish forever,” alongside snaps from his four years at Sporting.
“He added, “There is no other feeling other than eternal gratitude towards those who helped us create something so special: players for whom there are no words, colleagues who became friends and everyone who always supported us. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.”
Manuel Ugarte, a current Manchester United midfielder and former teammate of Bruno Fernandes at Sporting, joined fellow Sporting graduates in expressing their well wishes to Fernandes on his new venture.
Tottenham’s right-back Pedro Porro sent a heart emoji, while Francisco Trincao penned: “The adventure that changed my life… Thank you, we will miss you,” reports the Mirror.
As reported, Fernandes was among those who took off with the newly appointed manager Amorim on a private jet from Portugal to Manchester, with the group spotted embarking on their journey on Portuguese television.
Despite Amorim being announced as the new gaffer on November 1, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co are still hashing out the details regarding Amorim’s crew due to ongoing talks over compensation with Sporting.
Amorim’s remarkably successful stint with Sporting saw him commanding an impressive 71% win rate, along with hoisting league trophies and cups twice.
Notably, Fernandes, 29, and Candido, 28, have been integral members of Amorim’s coaching squad throughout his leadership career including stints at Casa Pia and Braga.
