Everything we learn about Piccadilly Circus automobile smash horror as stunning snaps shared
A car mounted the curb and smashed into a road sign outside Angus Steakhouse in Piccadilly Circus last night. Police have now revealed the driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
A black Toyota mounted the pavement and crashed into a road sign which stopped it from smashing straight through the window of the eatery. It came to a standstill just a metre away.
Several patrons became trapped inside and had to be freed by firefighters who promptly turned up at the scene.
Haymarket has been closed to traffic, with diversions in place for buses serving the area.
The Metropolitan Police arrived at the crash at 6.50pm and advised the public to avoid the area and allow emergency teams to carry out their work safely.
An ambulance was also in attendance. Emergency workers were met with a scene of shattered glass covering the pavement.
A pedestrian and a passenger in the car were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver was also taken but only as a precaution.
It is not thought to be terror related, with a member of staff at Angus Steakhouse saying the driver ‘obviously lost control’.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has since been bailed.
Metropolitan Police have today released the following statement to the Daily Star: “Police were called at approximately 18:50hrs on Tuesday, 12 November to reports of a collision involving a car in Coventry Street, junction with Haymarket, SW1.
“Witnesses reported a car mounted the pavement before colliding with a building. Two people – a pedestrian and a passenger who was in the car – were taken to hospital for treatment.
Their condition has been assessed as non life-threatening. The driver of the car was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution. No reports of any other serious injuries. The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, he has since been bailed.
“Enquiries into the circumstances continue. At this time the incident is not being treated as terrorist related.”
