Bruno Fernandes hails ‘standout’ high quality in Ruben Amorim – and divulges what makes the brand new Man United supervisor a ‘nice character’

Bruno Fernandes has given Ruben Amorim‘s arrival at Manchester United a rubber stamp of approval, hailing the new head coach’s ‘standout’ qualities.

Amorim touched down in Manchester on Monday and is quickly finding his feet at the club’s Carrington training complex where introductions have already been made with a host of first-team players.

The 39-year-old is tasked with resurrecting United’s season and sorting through the chaos left by Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was sacked last month and will oversee his first game in charge against Ipswich on November 24.

Amorim has become one of Europe’s most sought after managers having guided Fernandes’ previous club Sporting Lisbon to two top-flight Portuguese titles – ending the club’s near 20-year wait – and is the only head coach in Europe’s top leagues to oversee a 100 per cent winning start to the season.

United captain Fernandes will have to wait until after the international break to formally meet his new boss, but is raising excitement levels at Old Trafford by issuing a glowing review of Amorim.

Explaining what United supporters can expect from the club’s seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit in 2013, Fernandes told MUTV: ‘For me what stands out for me is the connection he has with players. 

‘When the manager is going from your club in the middle of the season with all the things they have still to win, you see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they make him feel part of the team and the way they treat him, it shows he’s a great character and he is someone that gives his all to the players.’

The 30-year-old playmaker who has scored four goals and registered seven assists across all competitions this season also explained Amorim will ‘defend’ his players from public criticism.

During Ten Hag’s erroneous reign, the Dutchman was often left short of answers when analysing disastrous performances and instilled a hardcore disciplinarian approach that players at times went against.

Amorim wants to establish his own culture at the club after deciding against keeping interim manager and United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy on in an assistant capacity and Fernandes believes younger players need an environment to ‘shine’ in.

‘I have seen many moments where players were struggling and he goes to the press conference to defend his players to give them the best opportunity to shine,’ he added.

‘He had a really young team so he needed to do that, hopefully, he can do the same with us.’

Meanwhile, Amorim has already began working with a host of young players in his first-team squad having met with both Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro as the pair continue their rehabilitation from injury.

His immediate job at hand is turning around the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season with United 13th in the league standings and already 13 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
