Harry Kane dropped by Lee Carsley after slamming teammates for withdrawing from squad
Harry Kane won’t be starting for England in their Nations League clash with Greece on Thursday.
Kane, 31, was selected by Lee Carsley for England’s latest international fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. However, Kane won’t be part of the starting line-up on Thursday, Daily Star Sport understands.
The Bayern Munich captain is said to have been left furious at the decision – which comes after Kane slammed his teammates from withdrawing from the squad.
Aaron Ramsdale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden withdrew from the squad, with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite the latest to drop out on Wednesday evening.
“[Gareth] Southgate brought the joy to play for England back,” said Kane. “Every camp people were excited to come, every camp people wanted to play for England and that’s the most important thing.
“I think England comes before anything. England comes before club, it is the most important thing as a professional footballer. Gareth was hot on that and he wasn’t afraid to make decisions if that started to drift from certain players.”
When asked if he believed that might have drifted this week, Kane added: “It’s a shame this week, obviously. It’s a tough period of the season and maybe that’s been taken advantage of a little bit.
“I don’t really like it if I’m totally honest. England comes before anything and any club situation.”
The Three Lions are out for revenge on Thursday after Carsley’s side were shocked in Greece during the October international break.
Carsley responded to Kane’s comments: “The focus all camp has been on the players that are here. It’s important that we make the most of the situation. With the amount of players that have pulled out, it gives other players an opportunity to be here. The focus has been purely on the players that are here.
“It’s [Harry’s] opinion. I can only deal with what’s in front of us. November is a challenging window, in the past we’ve had eight or nine call-offs. I know the Under-21s and Under-20s have had a lot of players pull out as well, so I think it’s definitely that period of the season.
“I think fatigue and small injuries have played a part in it. It’s a brilliant opportunity for other players on the outside of the squad. Now it’s their chance.”
