Town ravaged by ‘bullet-proof animal that likes to get unfastened’ – now there’s two
Residents of Horry County, South Carolina, are keeping a desperate eye out for two escaped emus who have ravaged the area since June.
According to UPI, locals in the Loris area of the county reported sightings of one of the giant flightless birds wandering on its own earlier this week. On a Facebook group named What’s Happening In Loris SC, one man tentatively confessed to being the owner of the escaped beast. “For everyone that keeps seeing an emu, yes it is mine,” wrote Sam Horace on the group.
But then the blushing owner dropped a bombshell. Because what’s worse than one wild, notoriously bad-tempered, escaped emu? The answer is two – precisely the situation the people of Loris found themselves lumped with.
Sam revealed there are actually two emus that had escaped from one of her properties, and they’ve been on the loose since June. “They got loose 3 months ago. They are feral and not trained like the ones we have at the house. Local law enforcement has already been at my house, we are trying to get a tranquilliser approved so we can bring them home,” she wrote.
Horry County Police said authorities are now working together with Morace’s family in order to locate and capture the giant birds.
The large feathered animals are known for having a short temper – in 2022, one vigilante emu even chased a criminal through the streets of Wiltshire. They have sharp talons capable of landing fatal blows on humans and can run very fast, making them worthy opposition.
They even once famously “won a war” against us – in the 1930s, during a month-long period dubbed The Emu Wars when the Australian government tried [and failed] to cull the massive population of the creatures.
According to reports, the task of the Aussie military was made even harder by the toughness of the emu’s pelts, which could withstand bullets to a certain extent.
