England and Ireland followers dubbed as a ‘shame’ as each nationwide anthems booed
England and Ireland fans have been slammed as ‘disgraceful’ as both national anthems were booed.
The Three Lions welcomed Ireland to Wembley on Sunday evening knowing matching or bettering Greece’s result will see them promoted back into the Nations League top division. However, before kick-off both national anthems were played to the crowd.
And both anthems were promptly met by jeers. “England fans booing another nations national anthem. Disgraceful scenes,” one fan shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I remember when the singing of a national anthem by both teams was louder than the booing,” a second said. While a third posted: “I’m not too bothered by international football but possibly the worst aspect of it is the t***s that boo the opposition’s national anthem!”
“Never heard such a wall of booing of a national anthem,” a fourth said. And another added: “Who booed the other’s national anthem the loudest? 1-0 to Ireland. I reckon.”
England’s national anthem has been the subject of debates in recent months – with interim boss Lee Carsley opting not to sing the national anthem in the dugout.
“This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland,” said Carsley. “The gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems. So it’s something that I have never done.
“I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off…I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of.”
While Thomas Tuchel, who will take over the role on January 1, said: “”I will absolutely start learning it. I experienced it three times here at Wembley in the cup finals two or three times – it was very moving. I don’t want to offend people.”
