‘Rare’ £1 coin price £750 – do you may have one in your again pocket
Rare coins are all the rage right now. But it’s not just quirky 50ps that are getting coin buffs excited. TikTok’s @CoinCollectingWizard has flagged up several coins to watch out for in your change.
One such design recently fetched £205 on eBay, while another is touted to be worth an eye-watering £750. Chatting to his 210,500 followers, the coin guru asked: “Have you ever found a coin that just doesn’t look right? It could be an error! ” He then highlighted two particular coins, starting with a misstruck £1. He explained: “This error £1 coin has had the design for the new £1 struck on an old £1 coin base. The error is believed to have happened when the familiar round £1 was replaced with the new 12-sided coin in 2017. One recently sold on eBay for £205 in 2018.”
And it’s not just pound coins causing a stir. A bronze 20p piece also caused quite the commotion online, with claims it sold for nearly £800, reports the Mirror.
The TikToker added: “One mistake collectors want to get their hands on is this normally silver 20p coin in bronze. This happened after being struck onto the metal normally used for a 1p coin that had slipped into the wrong batch. This error has been confirmed by the Royal Mint as an extremely sought-after minting error.”
“These are super rare and are not specific to any year. We’ve had a look online to see how much these error coins sell for but it doesn’t look like there are any currently available on sale. But experts have previously valued these coins at £750 each.”
Sometimes, rare coins can be overlooked in your pocket change, but the reality is so much more different. The value of a special coin can depend on various factors, from its mintage to the history behind it.
If you’ve ever stumbled upon a potential treasure in your stash and wondered about its worth, it’s advisable to consult a professional for valuation. You never know when a humble penny in your pocket could fetch a six-figure sum.
