UK snow mapped as roads ‘impassable’ and colleges shut in ‘style of winter’ – full checklist

Brits are battling through a snowy winter nightmare with power outages and travel mayhem as ‘unpassable’ roads emerge following an Arctic onslaught that blanketed parts of the UK overnight. The nation was on alert for “disruptive snow”, ice, and a chill in the air yesterday after the Met Office rolled out a series of yellow weather warnings across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England.

Forecasts predicted up to 20 centimetres of thesnow piling up in the hardest-hit regions, giving Brits their “first taste of winter”, the weather experts claimed. Some of these yellow alerts were set to expire at 10am today, but some have been stretched until 10 am tomorrow. The warnings highlight potential power cuts, travel disruptions on roads and public transport, and even the possibility of communities becoming isolated, according to the weather boffins. “An area of snow may bring disruption to a central swathe of the UK during Monday night and Tuesday morning,” they’ve announced.

Snow and hail showers were expected to hammer northern Scotland intermittently, intensifying and becoming more frequent from Monday night into much of Tuesday, and then continuing into Wednesday morning. Ahead of the deluge, the forecasters warned: “2 to 5 cm of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with up to 10 cm in some spots by the end of Tuesday, and potentially 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres.”

The Met Office also suggested that people prepare in advance for potential power cuts or being cut off from services due to the snow, recommending the gathering of torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items. Some schools across the country are also expected to shut down as the Met Office warns of dangerous conditions caused by the arctic snow blast. You can check if schools have closed in your area on the UK government website here.
