Ruben Amorim instructed he was proper to make ‘unpopular choice’ at Man Utd

Gary Pallister reckons new Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was right to axe Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy took charge of United on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Erik ten Hag last month. The former United favourite led United on an unbeaten four game run, before stepping aside for Amorim, who will take charge of his first game at Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Van Nistelrooy was keen to stay at United and be part of Amorim’s coaching staff. But he was let go within hours of the Portuguese coach arriving in Manchester at the start of last week.

The decision has proved unpopular in some quarters, while former United striker Louis Saha claimed Amorim got rid of Van Nistelrooy because he might have felt threatened by him. But Pallister says he has no problem with Amorim’s decision.

The former United defender told TG Casino: “I’ve got no issue with Ruben Amorim letting go of Ruud van Nistelrooy. As a manager, you must trust your staff to be completely onside with your approach, and Amorim has worked with these guys for several years, so he trusts them explicitly.

“I doubt he’d have known Ruud previously, and it feels like he needs his team there to make sure everyone’s on the same page. As well as Ruud did during his short managerial stint with the club, and as popular a figure as he is at Manchester United, I think he’ll understand if a new manager wants to bring in his own staff.

“So I’m completely at ease with the decision he’s made – and I’m sure he is too.”
