Brits warned to ‘purchase these seven gadgets’ earlier than Storm Bert descends on total UK
The UK is bracing for a return of snowstorms this weekend as Storm Bert brings another Arctic blast to various parts of the country. Despite the dramatic forecast, both the Met Office and British Gas have provided advice on how to prepare for snow storms, offering recommendations on what to do and how to ensure you’re equipped at home if heavy snowfall occurs.
The Met Office has predicted snow and ice for several areas of the UK today and Friday, issuing a fresh yellow weather warning for snow affecting Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leicester, North Wales, parts of Yorkshire including Sheffield, and much of Scotland. This warning commences at midday on Thursday and continues until 10am on Friday.
Further warnings have been issued for Saturday, including a rarer and more serious amber warning for snow in parts of Scotland. Other regions will also experience snow and rain, including Yorkshire, Newcastle, the North East, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Stoke, and Nottingham.

Meanwhile, other parts of the country such as Wales and the South West of England are under a heavy rain warning.
The Met Office has issued a domestic SOS, urging Brits to brace for potential cut-off scenarios due to heavy disruption amid snow chaos. In sage advice, they suggest: “People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential item,” reports the Express.
British Gas echoes this sentiment with a checklist for the icy onslaught, insisting every UK home should stockpile seven key survival items – such as spare batteries, water reserves, cosy covers, and a lifeline to the outside world aka a phone charger. Their statement reads: “That’s things like medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food and snacks, and extra blankets. You should also keep a torch, batteries and a phone charger close by too.”
Saturday’s forecast is chilling, with the Met Office predicting: “Outbreaks of rain will spread northeastwards on Saturday, preceded by a spell of snow across parts of northern England and Scotland. Whilst snow will become increasingly confined to higher elevations with time, there is the chance of a transient period of snow to low levels in some areas, with perhaps as much as 5-10 cm accumulating in places, especially the Vale of York, before turning back to rain.”
In high-rise areas, snow might stack up fast – imagine 10-20 cm on surfaces above 150m, skyrocketing to a whopping 20-40 cm if you’re living large above 300m.
“In conjunction with strengthening winds, difficult driving conditions are likely, especially over higher level routes, with possibly some interruptions to power supplies. In addition, the rapid thaw of lying snow as milder air arrives, with perhaps an additional 20-40 mm of rain in some upland areas during Saturday night, will lead to a greater likelihood of rainfall impacts later in the period.”
