Gatwick Airport evacuated as ‘safety incident’ declared and flights delayed
Gatwick Airport has been evacuated and locked down. According to an Gatwick Express spokesman on social media: “Gatwick Airport will not be served until further notice. This is due to the Police and emergency services dealing with an incident at the airport.”
Flights have been cancelled, with passengers raging on social media: “Gatwick airport evacuation today 10:27am. All flights delayed”. The only official statement from Gatwick Airport came by way of a short statement, which said: “A large part of the South Terminal has been evacuated as a precaution while we continue to investigate a security incident. Passengers will not be able to enter the South Terminal while this is ongoing.
“Safety and security of our passengers and staff remains our top priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

No details of what has happened have been given, however passenger Nick Meacham posted videos on social media from the scene, showing hoards of passengers packed outside the entrance as well as leaving the building.
He said: “Arrived at London Gatwick for routine connection. Got through customs to find out they’re evacuating the entire airport. Even people through security are being taken outside. Trains shut down and 1000’s of all over the streets and carparks waiting.”
And another wrote: “Flight is delayed further and being told not to go back to departure lounge but stay near the gates….no estimated time of departure yet. Still boarding to gate area so fingers crossed.”
It was also confirmed that “Local buses are also affected and unable to run to Gatwick Airport, so we would advise to avoid using this route” by Gatwick Express.
