Major supermarkets to close all UK branches for 3 days subsequent month
It’s a nightmare before Christmas as two major UK supermarkets announce which days they’re closing their doors next month.
Aldi and Waitrose have spoken out and revealed their Christmas opening hours over the festive period, and when shoppers can expect to be without a quick “pop-to-the-shops” excuse. While the two grocery giants are closing for three days, most browsers can expect to see similar closing hours to last Christmas.
These are among the first opening hours announced among the supermarkets, with the big day just four weeks away. Other retailers are expected to make their announcements over the coming weeks, with shoppers keen to get their turkey to check outs as soon as possible.

Aldi made their announcement via an infographic shared online. Currently, they are completely closing all UK branches on Christmas Day (December 25), Boxing Day (December 26) and New Years Day (January 1).

Over the Christmas period, they are extending opening hours to accommodate for an expected rush. On December 16, shoppers will get the normal hours of 8am-10pm, but the following day Saturday December 21 will be 7am-10pm.
From then, Sunday December 22 will have normal operating hours, 9.30-4pm. Christmas even is 7am-6pm. Between the 27th and New Years, the store will be open 8am-8pm apart from Sunday trading hours.
Similarly, Waitrose are also closing shop Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years. However, some shoppers will be happy to know that some stores are opening, mainly for Deliveroo and Uber Eats orders.

These takeaway options will only be available on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. More information on whether your local one is open or not will be available closer to Christmas.
Tesco, Asda, M&S, Sainsburys and other supermarkets are yet to reveal when they’ll open, but we expect them to open in a similar pattern. Last year, Tesco opened for Boxing Day from 9am until around 6pm.
According to Kantar, the busiest shopping day for supermarkets was Friday, December 22, with over 25 million trips made across the country.
