Parcel supply theft soars as knowledgeable warns individuals to be cautious of ‘porch pirates’

Parcel delivery theft has hit eye-watering numbers with shoppers warned to be wary of “porch pirates” around Black Friday.

New data shows that 23 million packages are stolen or go missing from UK doorsteps each year, costing consumers a staggering £1.2bn annually.

A huge 36% say they’ve had a package stolen from their doorstep, according to the study by home improvement platform Checkatrade.

And with UK deliveries expected to rise 10% this festive season, the risk of theft is greater than ever.

Porch Piracy has ruined many festive plans, causing three in 10 Brits to be without a gift for their loved one on Christmas Day.

Those snapping up Black Friday bargains this week are also being warned to be on high alert.

Checkatrade is warning consumers to review their home security, suggesting doorbell cams, floodlights and re-landscaping to create safe hidey-holes.

Dan Smith, Checkatrade’s security specialist, said: “Porch pirates typically seek out dark, unmonitored entryways.

“Installing outdoor motion-sensor lighting is a powerful preventative measure as it makes it more challenging for thieves to operate under the cover of darkness.

“For those in flats or apartments, security options may feel limited.

“However, installing a video doorbell or surveillance camera at your entrance can act as a deterrent and a helpful tool for catching unscrupulous characters in the act.”
