Roy Keane’s controversial quotes after Man Utd icon confronts indignant Ipswich fan

Ex-Manchester United star turned Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane was involved in a heated confrontation with an Ipswich Town fan over the weekend.

The former Premier League ace midfielder was confronted by an Ipswich supporter following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with the Tractor Boys at Portman Road. The alleged fan, Neil Finbow, claims to have been “offered out” by Keane in a Facebook post, where he also branded the Sky pundit a “k***”.

Footage from the incident shows Keane approaching a set of fans, telling one of them: “I’ll wait for you in the car park and we can discuss it.” So in true Daily Star Sport fashion, that got us thinking.

Keane on Andy Robertson

The baby comment had all the Sky Sports pundit in stitches

During Liverpool and Arsenal’s 2-2 draw during the 2022/23 season at Anfield, Roy Keane ended up calling Andy Robertson a baby multiple times. At half-time, there was an altercation between Robertson and official Constantine Hatzidakis that saw the official appear to elbow the former.

Speaking ahead of the second-half on Sky, presenter David Jones said: “At half-time, this is what we saw. official Constantine Hatzidakis clashing here with Andy Robertson, who is claiming he’s been elbowed in the throat. Have you ever seen anything like it Roy?”

Keane replied: “No, not really. But Robertson, do you know what, does he grab the linesman first? I’m not sure, but he’s complaining. He should be more worried about his defending.

“Do you know what it is, that Robertson? I’ve watched him a number of times. He’s a big baby. That’s what he is. Just get on with the game and concentrate on your defending. He does grab the linesman first.”

Keane added at full-time: “What’s he [Robertson] going over to him for? What’s he complaining for? I said at half-time, Robertson, what a baby. What a big baby. Just get on with the game. Baby.”

The final “baby” caused Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards and Jones to all breakout into laughter – with even Keane cracking a smile.

Keane on ‘swinging punches’ at David de Gea

Keane never shied away from taking a shot at former United goalkeeper David de Gea, including when the Premier League returned for action during ‘Project Restart’ back in 2020.

So naturally, with United 1-0 down to Tottenham Hotspur, Keane came out swinging on Sky Sports at half-time, singling out both De Gea and Harry Maguire who were at fault for Spurs‘ goal.

Keane said: “I’m shocked. I’m shocked at that goal. I’ve watched a lot of football over the years but to give away that goal. I can’t believe Manchester United.

“I can’t believe [Luke] Shaw heading the ball and then running forward. I’m staggered at Maguire, staggered that an international player can just get done like this, and I am sick to death of this goalkeeper.

“I would be fighting him at half time. I would be swinging punches at this guy. This is a standard save for an established international goalkeeper.

He finished: Man United, Maguire and De Gea, I wouldn’t even let them on the bus after the match. Get a taxi back to Manchester. These are established international players. You do your job – we’re trying to get the top four. God forbid about winning trophies. I am disgusted with it. Maguire, De Gea, you should hang your head in shame.”

Keane on his former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy

Keane made these comments ahead of the 2002 World Cup – and unsurprisingly they cost him his place in McCarthy’s squad at the tournament.

He was openly critical at how his manager had gone about his preparations for Japan and South Korea – leading to a major confrontation. Ireland made the Round of 16 that year, losing on penalties to Spain.

Keane said: “Mick, you’re a liar… you’re a f***ing w*****. I didn’t rate you as a player, I don’t rate you as a manager, and I don’t rate you as a person. You’re a f***ing w***** and you can stick your World Cup up your a***. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country! You can stick it up your b******.”

Keane on his Alf Inge Halaand tackle

This tackle was arguably the Irishman’s most shocking moment on a football pitch.

Keane had allegedly been plotting his revenge on Manchester City’s Alf Inge Halaand, Erling’s father, for three years after the Norwegian ended his season with a knee injury in September 1997. The United hardman certainly got his payback, with Haaland failing to play a single match after the challenge.

Keane said: “I’d waited long enough. I f***ing hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you c***. And don’t ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.”

Keane on Robbie Keane’s baby

This line had reporters in stitches during his time with the Republic of Ireland on Martin O’Neill’s staff. While fielding questions, he was asked if Robbie Keane would be late to report for international duty due to his wife having had a baby. Of course, the ex-United midfielder was completely deadpan in his response.

Keane said: “Robbie… why wouldn’t he be? He didn’t have the baby, did he? Unless he’s breastfeeding he should be alright.”

Keane on Rio Ferdinand playing “badly”

Roy Keane and Alex Ferguson - Keane was sold by the United boss after reportedly ripping into teammates on MUTV, and in 2013 the pair’s frosty relationship continued when Ferguson heavily criticised the Irishman in his autobiography

These were the comments that ultimately ended Keane’s United career. The then skipper laid into seven senior players at Old Trafford on MUTV, including the likes of Rio Ferdinand. Unsurprisingly, Sir Alex Ferguson demanded the show was pulled from being broadcast.

Keane said: “Just because you are paid £120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham, you think you are a superstar. The younger players have been let down by some of the more experienced players. They are just not leading. There is a shortage of characters in this team. It seems to be in this club that you have to play badly to be rewarded. Maybe that is what I should do when I come back. Play badly.”

Keane on his love dogs, not people

And finally, these comments aren’t really controversial, but they are peak Keane. Keane loves dogs – so much so he had an autobiography written for his dog, Triggs. In fact, he likes them so much he prefers them to people.

Keane said: “Unlike people, dogs don’t talk s****e. They won’t betray you or otherwise let you down.”
