Tourist boat with dozens on board sinks off Egypt’s coast as passengers go lacking

A boat named Sea Story has reportedly sunk off the coast of Egypt. Dozens of tourists, near a popular diving spot, Shaab Satayah, close to the tourist resort of Marsa Alam.

The alarm was raised by a crew member at approximately 5.30am this morning, prompting the coastguard to launch a search operation, reports the Mirror. The tourists are currently missing, and there is no update on where they could be. The journey is well travelled, as they went out on a multi-day diving trip in the Red Sea, one of the most popular diving destinations.

The ship departed from the port of Ghalib in Marsa Alam yesterday, with an expected arrival at Hurghada Marina on Friday. On board were 31 tourists of different nationalities. There were also 14 crew members on board.

Egypt’s Navy were also recruited to the situation as the search party has been out all morning. Not only that, a helicopter is patrolling the skies above the ocean to see if they can catch any tourists in need. Amr Hanafy, governor of the Red Sea region, said that several of the tourists had already been rescued but did not provide an updated toll on the number of passengers still missing.

The ship was built in 2022, is 144ft long and can carry up to 32 passengers.
