Arne Slot reveals true colors with Jurgen Klopp remark after Liverpool beat Real Madrid

Arne Slot watched Liverpool kick the backside of a Real Madrid team he labelled a ‘pain in the ass’.

Second half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo secured Liverpool’s first win over Real since 2009. The win stretched Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 15 games – and fired them back to the top of the Champions League table.

Liverpool could even afford to see Mo Salah miss a penalty. And Slot said it was extra special to get the better of Spanish giants who had become Liverpool’s nemesis down the years.

Slot said: “You know how special it is to play against a team that has won the Champions League so many times. They were a pain in the ass for Liverpool for many years too. It is a big week and it is pleasing to see.”

Touching upon the great work of his predecessor, who established Liverpool as one of Europe’s top teams by reaching three Champions League finals during his nine-year reign – but losing two of them to Madrid – Slot then addressed a question about how quickly he has managed to make a big impact at Anfield.

He said: “You want to implement the playing style as soon as possible. That is not difficult because it wasn’t that different to Jurgen [Klopp]’s.

“It is great to see the players doing as we expect. If before the season I had counted points for this point in the season, I wouldn’t have imagined as much as we have now.”

A miserable night for Real saw superstar Kylian Mbappe have a spot kick saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. The Spanish giants are now languishing in 24th place and struggling to reach the knockout stages.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted Liverpool deserved to win, but backed Mbappe to come through his difficult spell. He said: “I think to be totally honest, it is a fair result. Liverpool have a really good dynamic and are in great form.

“I think for Mbappe, it is a difficult moment ,so we have to support him and give him our love. He will soon be fine.

“It could be a lack of confidence, maybe. You don’t need to blame him for missing penalties. People miss penalties, it happens a lot.”
