Frank Lampard will get new managerial job as Chelsea legend returns to the dugout

Frank Lampard is back in the managerial hot seat after being unveiled as the new boss of Coventry City.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder has been out of work since leaving his temporary role at Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2022/23 season. Now, he’s set to return to the Championship, where he previously led Derby County to the play-off final in 2019.

Lampard will take the reins from the highly respected Mark Robins, who was sacked by the club’s owner Doug King earlier this month in a shock firing that left Sky Blues fans outraged and was branded ‘the stupidest decision of all time’.

However, King expressed his delight at Lampard’s appointment, saying: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach,” reports the Mirror.

Lampard’s appointment comes after a lengthy search by King, who faced backlash for axing Robins on November 7. The new boss will be joined by assistant coaches Joe Edwards and Chris Jones and will face the media on Thursday afternoon.

His first match in charge will be against Cardiff at the CBS Arena on Saturday. The Sky Blues suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of promotion hopefuls Burnley on Tuesday night, leaving them in dire need of a change in course.

Currently languishing in 17th place, they are precariously perched just two points above the relegation zone.
