Real Madrid coach crashes into lorry on motorway after Champions League defeat to Liverpool

Real Madrid’s team coach was involved in a motorway crash after their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.

The incident, which took place on the M40, was captured in footage shared on social media showing the stationary coach that seemed to have collided with a lorry.

No players or staff were onboard at the time, but the vehicle was transporting the team’s kit. Despite teams usually flying home straight after a European match, the coach would still need to be driven back to Madrid, with the M40 being the typical route taken from the north west to the coast.

The Spanish giants, who have had a shaky start defending their European crown, suffered a surprising defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night. Liverpool opened the scoring through Alexis Mac Allister before Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty, adding to his ongoing struggles. Substitute Cody Gakpo eventually secure all three points with a thumping heading.

The luxury Real Madrid bus, which mirrors the design of the newly renovated Bernabeu stadium, was revealed in October 2024. The Bernabeu’s revamp cost a whopping £1.5 billion, reports the Mirror.

This isn’t the first time the Los Blancos’ coach has been involved in an accident, with a similar event occurring in February. Carlo Ancelotti’s squad travelled to a Champions League match against RB Leipzig and landed in Erfurt instead of Leipzig due to a strike at the latter airport.

In the wake of Real Madrid’s bumpy ride back to England, a 100-mile final leg bus trip culminated in an unfortunate shunt with a white Toyota, reported by German outlet Bild.

Jude Bellingham reflected on Madrid’s defeat against Liverpool, their third in five European outings this season, saying: “Kylian is a wonderful player but the pressure is humongous. The penalty is not why we lost the game. Kylian can keep his head high and I know for sure he will produce many more big moments for this club.”

Elaborating on Real’s performance, Ancelotti added: “We did okay in the first half, we held them and set up quite well and defended well as a unit. In transitions we were okay. But then we lost the ball and once we gained the ball we made the wrong decision going forward.”
