Rupert Grint’s HUGE web value is revealed because the Harry Potter actor is ordered to pay £1.8million tax invoice after shedding HMRC case

Rupert Grint‘s net worth has been revealed after the actor was hit by £1.8million tax bill after losing a HMRC case.

According to Market Realist, Grint, 36, has an estimated net worth of approximately $50 million (£40 million).

Most of his wealth comes from his earnings during his time in Harry Potter, where he reportedly earned $70 million (£55 million) across the eight films.

The tax dispute dates back to 2019, when HMRC launched an investigation into Grint’s 2011-12 tax return.

The actor had received £4.5 million from a company managing his business affairs as ‘consideration for rights, records, and goodwill’ from his work.

Grint argued this sum was a ‘capital asset’ subject to capital gains tax, but HMRC contended it should be treated as income.

Following the investigation, HMRC ordered Grint to pay an additional £1,801,060 in tax.

At a hearing in the First-Tier Tribunal in late 2022, lawyers for the actor appealed HMRC’s decision, maintaining that the correct amount of tax had already been paid.

However, in a ruling, Tribunal Judge Harriet Morgan dismissed Grint’s appeal, concluding that the £4.5 million sum ‘is taxable as income.’

Judge Morgan stated that the money ‘derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint,’ and was ‘otherwise realised’ as income during the 2011/12 tax year.

Grint previously lost a separate court battle concerning a £1 million tax refund in 2019.

The tax case examined a period covering the 20 months up to April 5, 2010, during which Grint reportedly generated a turnover of £28 million and £15 million in net profits.

Grint’s accountants attempted to shift eight months of his income into the 2009/10 tax year when the top tax rate was 40%, ahead of the introduction of a new 50% rate in 2010/11.

This adjustment aimed to reduce his tax bill on that income by 10%.

The accountants said he had moved his accounting date from July 31 to April 5, bringing the whole 20-month period within the lower tax rate.

The tax authorities agreed that Grint had every right to change his accounting date – but denied that he had actually done so.

A tax tribunal judge in 2016 agreed with HM Revenue and Customs and dashed the actor’s hopes of a bumper rebate.

Since ending his Harry Potter role, Grint has starred in numerous roles on stage and screen, including a recurring role over the last four years in Apple TV series Servant.

He was the first of the core three Potter child stars to become a parent.

Rupert and his wife Georgia Groome – who rose to fame for her role in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging – have been together since 2011 and welcomed their daughter Wednesday in May 2020.

Six months after their baby’s arrival, Rupert then joined Instagram to reveal her name.

Harlow native Rupert wrote in an accompanying caption: ‘Hey Instagram… only 10 years late, but here I am.

‘Grint on the Gram! Here to introduce you all to Wednesday G. Grint. Stay safe, Rupert.’
