Montpellier vs Lille conflict marred by mass brawl sparked by supervisor chasing rival participant
Montpellier’s clash with Lille was overshadowed by a mass brawl on Sunday afternoon.
Arnaud Nordin earned Montpellier a valuable point in the 95th minute as temperatures reach boiling point at the Stade de la Mosson. In an attempt to waste time, Montpellier’s Tanguy Coulibaly kicked the ball against Lille coach Bruno Genesio when it had already gone out for a throw in.
Genesio stormed onto the pitch, confronting Coulibaly as players from both sides pilled in on the brawl. Coulibaly was sent off for his role in starting the brawl.

Mitchel Bakker, who was on Lille’s bench, was also sent off for his role in the scuffle. Speaking after the game, Genesio said: “A young player cleared, voluntarily or not, the ball which hit my leg. For me, it was not the result of the match.
“A bit of anger followed, two red cards were shown. We must grow during matches which are not easy to play to avoid these unpleasantness at the end of the match,”

“Apart from the result, I remember our lack of quality in the second half. We offered too little to be dangerous, we know that in this kind of match, anything is possible until the end. We could have played with more technical mastery.
“I don’t like to talk too much after matches, because from experience, you can say stupid things in the heat of the moment. There were disappointments, regrets, but we can’t go back.
“It’s up to us to find the solution to manage this problem, because it’s a problem that keeps happening: Lyon, Nice… it’s not a coincidence. We have to evolve mentally, to play our game until the end, in the high zones. We mustn’t get into a fight and give the ball back to the opponent.”
Montpellier are currently rock bottom of Ligue 1. Sitting on just eight points, the former Ligue 1 champions are already four points off safety. Lille, on the other hand, are fourth – just outside the automatic Champions League spots.
