How Virgin Media O2 helps Brits keep related over Christmas with free cellular knowledge
Virgin Media O2, has expanded it’s National Databank network to include access across all of it’s O2 stores – providing access to free data to people across the UK who need it.
The 300 databank offers free mobile data, texts and calls to help the 1.9 million people across the UK who experience poverty get online and stay connected to everything and everyone they love this Christmas and beyond.
According to a survey involving 2,000 adults as many as 42% of respondents know someone who may face difficulties during the Christmas period, either financially or emotionally.
Approximately one fifth (19%) are aware of someone, or several individuals, grappling with ‘data poverty’ a situation where they can’t afford sufficient internet data to fulfil their needs and desires online. And over 4 in 10 would feel concerned if they were unable to reach them by phone.
Nicola Green from Virgin Media O2, expressed: “We know that Christmas is a magical time for so many across the country and has the power to bring people together whether that’s in person or virtually. But there are some who could miss out on the magic of the festive season because they can’t afford mobile data.”
“This includes key moments like sending greetings or meeting up with friends or family, and not being able to access essential services from online banking to booking medical appointments.”
To raise awareness of the 1.9 million households in the UK who struggle to afford connectivity, the company has erected an eye-catching art installation at London’s South Bank.
From video calls to social media two thirds of Brits use online to stay connected and keep the festive spirit alive with loved ones. Consequently, 28% admit they’d be upset if they couldn’t reach out to their friends or family over the Christmas period.
The impact of being cut off from the internet, not just during the holiday season, but in our everyday lives, is massive. From accessing banking services and chatting with friends and family, to booking GP appointments. Brits admit that life without the internet can be difficult and can lead to frustrations and feelings of anxiousness.
Nicola added: “If you’re struggling or know someone affected by data poverty, we’ll provide a free SIM with 25GB of monthly data, plus calls and texts for 12 months.”
“It’s all part of our work to close the digital divide and our commitment to providing data and devices to help people in need to get online.”
