UK set for 557-mile vast Atlantic ‘mega storm’ as Brits brace for 80mph battering

New maps reveal that a 557-mile stretch of the UK, from Scotland’s Isle of Skye to Sussex in southern England, will be hit by wet and windy weather today. WXCharts forecasts suggest that around 7.5mm of rain could fall between 3pm and 4pm on Thursday, December 5, starting in northern Scotland before sweeping through Glasgow and Edinburgh and across the English border.

The West Midlands is also set for heavy rainfall on Thursday, while southern England remains largely unaffected. This comes as the Met Office issues warnings of strong winds up to 80mph, with numerous yellow alerts covering vast parts of the country.

The stormy conditions are set to resume on Friday night, December 6, with Belfast in Northern Ireland expected to face the worst of the downpours and areas of Scotland and Cumbria seeing about 0.6cm of snowfall. Other northern cities may not transform into winter wonderlands, but they could see up to 2mm of rainfall per hour from 6pm.

The storm is predicted to continue into the weekend, with further downpours on the northern England coast and heavy snowfall in southeast Scotland around midnight on Saturday. Weather maps also indicate that the bad weather will start to affect southern areas on Saturday morning, putting London and Sussex at risk of significant downpours, reports the Express.

The Met Office has issued a slew of yellow weather warnings for almost the entire UK, starting at 3pm on Friday and lasting until the early hours of Sunday at 6am, with gusts whipping up to 80mph, torrential downpours, and potential floods that could wreak havoc on travel plans.

Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution as “difficult conditions” are expected on the roads.

The Met Office warned: “Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences. If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.”

As for the five-day outlook, it’s a mixed bag of weather woes. The southeast will see rain dissipate overnight, while the northwest enjoys clearer skies.

Winds should take a breather by morning up north, with milder temps on the horizon. Down south, expect cloud cover with some lingering showers clearing out in the morning.
