Major low cost retailer sued by excessive road style model over ‘Furberry’ dupes
Huge British fashion house Burberry have launched a legal battle against a bargain store – and it’s not who you’d think.
The designer brand, famed for their heritage trench coats, has taken legal action against high street giant B&M in a trademark dispute. Burberry started the dispute earlier this week by taking their complaint to High Court. They claim B&M were posing some of their products as if they were made by the fashion house. While it is not yet confirmed which products they were referring to, it is said they could be related to a series of pet products made by B&M this year.
B&M released and sold a line of pet accessories which they dubbed “furberry.” This range includes dog bowls, toys, animal blankets, mats and beds, although it is not know if the range is included in the claim.

Burberry previously said it will not be commenting on the High Court action.
Trademark law is described as “a branch of law that protects distinctive marks that allow consumers to associate them with a specific product or service. It gives the owner of a trademark the right to use it exclusively and take legal action against anyone who infringes on it.”

Certain brands can claim a trademark over names, art, patterns, phrases, names or other products. Sometimes these are specifically made by the brand – and can only be used by them.
Any infringement of this can lead to huge fines, or in some extreme cases, prison. B&M has over 700 branches and over 4million customers a week, according to their date.
YouGov also claim 97% of people are familiar with B&M and 74% are frequent visitors. Adding to this, it’s the 3rd most popular retail brand and 31% of people think it’s “very important” to the UK economy.
On the other hand, Burberry has been making efforts to change-up its business after an operating loss of £41m in the six months ending September 28. The brand announced a £40m cost-saving initiative, which will take them back to their “core” of high-quality outerwear and scarves.
They will also re-assess price points to reflect their authority in leather goods.
