A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young mother who was killed when she was knocked off an e-bike in an alleged hit and run.

Keaton Muldoon, 23, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth after being held in connection with the death of Alana Armstrong.

Miss Armstrong, 25, who had a six-year-old son, was riding pillion on the bike when it was in collision with another vehicle in Batley Lane, Pleasley, Derbyshire, at around 8pm on November 26. She suffered what police described as ‘catastrophic’ injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The electric bike’s rider, a man in his 20s who is thought to have been Alana’s boyfriend, was badly hurt and had to have his leg amputated below the knee.

On Thursday, Derbyshire Police charged Muldoon with the murder of Alana and the attempted murder of Jordan Newton-Kay. He was also charged with driving while disqualified.

Muldoon, of Mansfield, Notts, made a brief appearance at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Friday morning accused of the offences.

The 23-year-old, who was wearing a grey sweater and jogging bottoms, spoke only to confirm his details during the two-minute hearing.

There was no application for bail or indication of pleas, and Muldoon, who was supported by a number of relatives and friends in the public gallery, was remanded back into custody to appear again at Derby Crown Court on Monday.

The incident involved a vehicle detectives previously said was thought to be a blue Land Rover Discovery, which had followed two e-bikes before allegedly ramming one of them. It then drove away without stopping.

Police also today appealed for the writer of a note left on the vehicle thought to have been involved to contact them.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: ‘We are urgently trying to trace the person who wrote a note on a Land Rover Discovery, believed to have been involved in the alleged murder of Alana Armstrong in Pleasley, Derbyshire.

‘It is believed that the dark blue Land Rover Discovery, which had a distinctive private plate, was parked in the Jacksons Park area of Mansfield overnight on Tuesday November 26 into the following day.

‘We believe that a note was written and placed on the Land Rover’s windscreen due to poor parking.

‘We want to speak to the writer of the note – or anyone who saw the car in the area as a matter of urgency.’

Earlier this week the charity Crimestoppers announced a reward of £20,000 for information leading to a conviction in connection with the death of Alana, of Tibshelf, Derbyshire.
