Wayne Rooney ‘documentary might be CANCELLED by creators’ if Plymouth tenure turns into ‘horror present’ – after stories claimed former Man United icon has TWO video games to save lots of his job

A big-money documentary into the managerial career of Wayne Rooney could be scrapped amid the former Manchester United star’s struggles in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

Argyle sit 21st in the Championship after a run of only one win in their last nine matches, which has included a slew of heavy defeats to the likes of Cardiff, Norwich and Bristol City.

This has led to speculation that the former Derby County and Birmingham City boss could be set for the sack, with Plymouth’s next two games against Oxford and Swansea said to be crucial as to whether the 39-year-old remains in his role.

A departure from Home Park could also have ramifications off the field, with a report claiming that a documentary charting Rooney’s ascent into the world of management could be cancelled if his fortunes don’t change.

According to a TV insider, who spoke to The Sun: ‘The whole point of the documentary was to celebrate his move from player to becoming a manager. But obviously if that ends up being more of a horror show then the creators, or the Rooney’s themselves, may pull the plug on the project.’

The documentary is being made by Lorton Entertainment, who also produced The Real Wagatha Story, which took a deep dive into the much-publicised legal battle between his wife Coleen and Rebekah Vardy

The production company was also involved in the 2022 programme about Rooney’s career which aired on Amazon Prime.

Since taking over at Home Park in May in what is Rooney’s fourth managerial job after spells at Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, the 39-year-old has won five of his 20 games, losing 10.

Following Argyle’s 4-0 thrashing by The Robins on Saturday chairman Simon Hallett rubbished reports that Rooney is facing the axe, telling The Plymouth Herald: ‘What we are going to do is not think about getting rid of him and changing him.

‘We are thinking about how we can support him. So there are no conversations going on about replacing Wayne but there are conversations going on about how we can support him to help him become the great coach that we think is in there.’

Hallett also insisted that Rooney, who is currently dealing with a major injury crisis, would be given money to spend in the transfer window as the club looks to move away from relegation trouble.

Despite their struggles on the pitch, Rooney has proven to be popular among the Plymouth fanbase who have welcomed his efforts to integrate himself in the city, while they have enjoyed some impressive victories against Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland along the way.

However, it is Plymouth’s away form that continues to be a major problem, with the Pilgrims having lost eight and drawn two of their past 10 games on the road, conceding 27 goals in the process.

Rooney opened up on the difficulties his side are facing following their most recent defeat, saying: ‘I’ve tried going at the players,’ he said. ‘I’ve tried encouraging and supporting them. I’ve tried everything really so I need to keep trying to find the right balance to fix the away performances.

‘I’ve been criticised since I was a 16-year-old boy, my whole career. What you always want is weapons to fight back with. At the minute we’ve got none.

‘So we have to take it on the chin and hope that we get through this, because the last two games arguably have been the toughest and hardest week of my managerial career.

‘So I need to find a way to get through it, but also get that message through to the players to make sure I lift them.’

Despite Hallett’s supportive words, Plymouth host Oxford on Saturday, who are the only other Championship team yet to win away this season, in what is a huge game for Rooney.
