Dad ‘distraught’ after returning dwelling from work for 10-minute break throughout Storm Darragh

A dad is ‘distraught’ after returning home for a break after finishing an airport pick-up.

Gary Gregory, 40, from Huyton near Liverpool, heard a bang at around 2pm this afternoon and he found a tree had fallen on his taxi during Storm Darragh.

The dad of two found the roof of his taxi collapsed and the back window had smashed.

Gary said: “We’re absolutely distraught that this happened. It’s two weeks before Christmas and being on the taxis is my only source of income.

“I was hoping to be out on the taxis tonight, but I don’t know when I will be back on the road now. I can’t believe this has happened.”

Storm Darragh has unleashed chaos across the country today, with multiple amber weather warnings issues by the Met Office.

Merseyside has been particularly blighted and the severe conditions forced the cancellation of the Merseyside Derby and a scheduled race meeting at Aintree.

Gusts of up to 93mph have battered parts of the country, leaving thousands without power, halting train services, and prompting warnings for millions to stay indoors.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for wind from 1am to 9pm on Saturday, December 7, followed by a yellow warning initially set to last from 9pm to 6am on Sunday, December 8. However, forecasters have now extended the yellow warning until 6pm on Sunday.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “In Wales gusts of 93mph were recorded overnight at Capel Curig and 92mph Aberdaron, while in north Devon 89mph has been reported early Saturday morning at Liscombe.”
