A man dubbed the ‘Naked Carpenter’ has been found guilty of attempted murder after attacking a police officer. Robert Jenner repeatedly stabbed PC Sean Quinn, 59, with a pair of scissors after he and his partner visited the defendant’s home in Maidstone, Kent in June last year.

In total, he inflicted 19 wounds above the neckline and a further four on the wrists and bare parts of the arm. Jenner is currently on remand in London’s high-security Belmarsh Prison, and was not present at the proceedings, which have been frequently delayed by Jenner’s refusal to engage with his solicitor or a psychiatrist.

His lawyer, however, claimed during the trial that he had acted in self defence because he believed that the officers had entered his home unlawfully, adding there had been no intent to kill them. Jenner had denied both attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but today (Tuesday December 10) was found guilty by a majority verdict of 10 to two after the jury of six men and six women deliberated for about five hours at the end of a week-long trial.

PC Quinn has not yet returned to work. Sentencing is to be held at a later date. Jenner first made headlines eight years ago when he outrages locals in Scotland with his naked carpentry, and then gained a criminal record for working as a delivery driver with no clothes on and wearing see through shorts to the supermarket.

In the latest incident, the officers went to to visit Jenner after reports emerged of a man running naked through Mote Park at 7.50pm on June 15 last year.

Reliving the moment he was attacked Quinn, who had been wearing a stab vest, told the jury: “He ran towards me. My first thought was he was trying to kill me for some reason and I thought I’m not going to die and get stabbed in the back.

“So I ran towards him. Thinking fast, I wanted to grab him. I couldn’t see the scissors at that point. The room had gone dark.

“Initially I felt a thud, but I didn’t comprehend what it was, across my head. I carried on doing what I was trying to do and that was to take hold of Mr Jenner and restrict his movements.

“I just wanted to bear hug him, keep hold and control him, get some kind of hold on him. I had no view at all of the scissors. I lost sight [of them]. The room had gone dark.”

Prosecutor Daniel Stevenson said: “The officers were doing nothing more than executing their public duty and arresting him on suspicion of committing yet another offence of exposure,” added Mr Stevenson.

“They behaved with professionalism and dignity in difficult circumstances. His conduct had nothing to do with defending himself. It had everything to do with his anger at the police.”

Of the prosecution’s assertion Jenner intended to kill or even to cause serious injury, the defence said: “Here there is a weapon available and there is a weapon used and there is an opportunity to cause a fatal injury, if that was desired.

“But what ended up was, although distressing and upsetting, nowhere near a fatal injury.”
