Nigel Farage named new favorite to develop into subsequent Prime Minister with ‘flurry’ of curiosity

Punters are whacking a bunch of cash on Reform leader and unwarranted milkshake recipient Nigel Farage to be the next PM – Keir Starmer might have a few things to say about that

Reform leader Nigel Farage is now the favourite to replace Sir Keir Starmer as the next prime minister.

With odds that might send a chill down the spines of Sir Keir and his mates in Whitehall, Ladbrokes has Farage at 5/2 to walk in the footsteps of William Gladstone, Winston Churchill, Clement Attlee and – somehow – Liz Truss.

It isn’t clear, however, just how much the “flurry” of bets made on Farage can actually indicate what the country is thinking, particularly with the next election so far away. Some might think odds are a good way of reflecting the national mood, but others would have it that it is akin to measuring wind speed with a balloon full of lead.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “For the first time, Nigel Farage now leads the way in the Next Prime Minister market, with a continuing flurry of bets being struck on Reform UK winning the most seats at the next General Election.”

The odds might also make grim reading for Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, who is behind Farage and Starmer on 3/1. Next up is deputy PM and Labour firebrand Angela Rayner on 6/1.

Following them is health secretary Wes Streeting on 10/1, with some in Westminster circles believing he is one of the governing party’s best communicators. His colleague and home secretary Yvette Cooper is next up on 16/1.

For the winner of the most seats at the next general election, Ladbrokes odds areas follows:

  • Conservatives – 6/4
  • Labour – 7/4
  • Reform UK – 9/4
  • Liberal Democrats – 50/1
  • Greens – 500/1

Odds for the year of next general election:

  • 2029 or later – 8/13
  • 2028 – 13/8
  • 2027 – 14/1
  • 2026 – 16/1
  • 2025 – 25/1

There have been a number of issues for the Government to deal with since its election victory in July. In a speech last week, the OM insisted he was sticking to his missions as he set out “ambitious” targets for Whitehall, despite claims he was “watering down” promises.

Starmer sought to strike an optimistic note after a challenging five months in power, saying Britain was “broken, but not beyond repair” and could still “do great things”.

Arguing his Government had taken action to “fix the foundations”, Sir Keir set out six “milestones” that he said would allow the public to “hold our feet to the fire” on the missions he set for himself before the election.

If Starmer can’t stick to his promises, he might see some of the odds shorten on his political foes – and allies.
