Jamie Carragher names main Man United star they need to ‘take into account promoting’ alongside Marcus Rashford, who he says will NEVER win a title because the membership’s main man

Jamie Carragher has named the huge Manchester United star that they should ‘consider selling’ and has claimed the stalwart is ‘not a great player’.

The Red Devils swapped beleaguered boss Erik ten Hag for Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim in October with the club stranded in 14th in the table.

The former Sporting Lisbon coach has had a mixed start to his stint in charge, suffering losses to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest but enjoying two wins in the Europa League, most recently against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday. 

United look set for an overhaul as Amorim aims to put his stamp on the club, with a host of comings and goings expected in the January transfer window and beyond. 

And now former Liverpool captain Carragher has become the latest pundit to weigh in on the new era at Old Trafford, writing in the Telegraph that the side should get rid of one of their longest-serving players.

He said: ‘A dilemma also looms with Bruno Fernandes. Unlike [Marcus] Rashford, Fernandes has been one of United’s best players during a tough period and would have shone with more quality around him during his Old Trafford career. 

‘But he is 30 now and there may be value in offloading him to raise funds. I’ve always felt Fernandes is a great talent rather than a great player. He creates a lot of chances but can be very indisciplined with and without the ball. 

‘That makes it a lot harder for United to defend as a compact unit as he chases the ball all over the pitch. It looks like great commitment to the supporters but the manager will be tearing his hair out.’

Fernandes joined United in January 2020 from Sporting and has often been viewed by fans as a rare shining light during a dark time for the club.

After 12 goals and eight assists in his first half-season, the midfielder has continued to contribute in the attacking third, racking up 84 strikes in 225 matches in a red shirt. 

He has enjoyed a solid opening half of the latest campaign, despite receiving red cards in consecutive matches earlier this season with one later rescinded, and has bagged five goals and 10 assists in 23 appearances. 

Carragher joined those directing their ire at Rashford after Mail Sport reported this week that United would consider offers of £40milllion for the forward. 

The Sky Sports pundit argued that the Englishman was not performing to a level which justifies the amount of money he is on and that his return of 11 goals in 48 Premier League matches in the last year and a half was ‘not good enough’.

The former Liverpool defender even went as far as to say that the Red Devils would ‘never win the Premier League or Champions League if he is leading the line’. 

United are under pressure to sell players to comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR), and raise funds for Amorim to strengthen his squad.

Shifting homegrown players counts as 100 per cent profit on the PSR balance sheet, and for some time now the spotlight has fallen on Rashford who has been at the club since the age of seven.

It’s understood the 27-year-old’s asking price would have been as much as £100m when he scored 30 goals in Ten Hag’s first season at United. But Rashford’s loss of form and the contract he signed last year worth a prohibitive £325,000-a-week means that his value has more than halved.

Even then, United are not anticipating any offers for Rashford who has started the last two games on the bench before his start in the Europa League clash with Viktoria Plzen.

Another option would be for the Red Devils to sell either of their two crown jewels –Kobbie Mainoo or Alejandro Garnacho – but that is something the club want to avoid.

Leny Yoro, bought for £59m from Lille in the summer as a star of the future, is another seen as virtually untouchable at Old Trafford, as is Fernandes.

Otherwise, United would entertain offers for most of their squad at the right price. ‘The reality is that everyone is for sale,’ an insider said on Wednesday night.

United are keen to keep hold of a number of players who have flourished under Amorim such as Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt, Bruno Fernandes, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.

Diallo will be a free agent in the summer and can talk to foreign clubs from the start of January, but United are hopeful he will sign a new contract.

Others are more readily available but will be difficult to sell even at vastly reduced prices, such as Antony – now valued at around £23m – Casemiro who earns £375,000-a-week, and Mason Mount and Luke Shaw who have both struggled with long-term injuries.

A number of players will be out of contract in the summer including Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton. They have little resale value unless, in the case of Maguire, United trigger a 12-month extension.

The club are struggling to comply with PSR rules after posting losses of £300m over the last three years. After spending another £200m on transfers in the summer, they did not budget on having to pay out an additional £21.4m to replace Ten Hag with Amorim.
