Darts star desires two gamers booted out of the Premier League even when they ‘deserve it’
Darts superstar Nathan Aspinall wants to see Gerywn Price and Gary Anderson left out of next year’s Premier League Darts line-up ‘whether they deserve it or not’
Darts star Nathan Aspinall believes Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson should be left out of next year’s Premier League Darts line-up.
The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) is required to include the top four players in the world, with the remaining four selected as wildcards. Luke Littler, who was far from the top 10 when chosen for this year’s tournament, ended up clinching the title.
Despite being big names in the sport, both Price and Anderson have shown reluctance towards competing due to the gruelling 17-week competition. Price has expressed uncertainty about participating if invited, while Anderson has hinted at outright refusal. “Premier League, you know what I think, I’m at the age now where I’ve done it, got the t-shirt, thank you very much but no,” the Flying Scotsman declared.
Aspinall, currently ranked 12th in the world, is likely to need a wildcard himself. He firmly believes that the remaining spots should go to those eager to compete, reports the Express.
“You know what, it really grates on me,” he vented to Online Darts. “I’m really good mates with Gary Anderson, really good mates with Gerwyn Price, but if they don’t want it, don’t give it to them, whether they deserve it or not.”
Aspinall is calling on professional darts tour leaders to consider players like him over big names who aren’t as dedicated. He feels it would reflect badly on the tour if they gave such players preferential treatment and instead feels he has the motivation and drive to be a star performer despite having a poor year.
The 33-year-old, who is preparing for this year’s World Darts Championship starting today, feels he deserves a spot over those who don’t put in the effort. He stated: “Why should they get that spot when people like myself… okay, I’ve had a bad year and I don’t deserve it, but I want it and I will bring something?”
“I will give 110 per cent every single night on that stage. If they can’t be arsed, why put them in? I just don’t get it. I don’t even know why the PDC would consider it. If they put them in it looks bad on the PDC in my opinion.”
